The Classics Club Spin #6 has been announced and the lucky number is: 1!
This means I will be reading Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote, first published in 1752. I first read about The Female Quixote in the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, and it staid that Charlotte Lennox’s second novel is ‘a forerunner of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey‘, which happens to be one of the few Austen novels I like. It also states that: ‘In the absence of any broader education, the understanding of Lennox’s heroine Arabella about the world around her has been drawn entirely from seventeenth-century French romances’, which reminds me of Emma, the heroine in Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. I look forward to reading The Female Quixote by 7th July, though I am slightly anxious about reading something pre-1800. I hope I enjoy it!
